Communicating with Symbols

Symbols can also be used to supplement communication for those that have difficulty communicating their ideas. With resources like 'Boardmaker', communication books or communication boards can be produced so that pupils can communicate what they would like to say. Following a developmental framework of communication (produced by Clare Latham, ACE Centre, Oxford) and with close participation of the individual communication books can be personalised for each pupil who requires one.

Some of our pupils with ASD use symbols to communicate their wants with a PECS book. PECS the Picture Exchange Communication System is a system of communication especially designed for people with autism giving them a method of requesting that requires them to interact with other people in an appropriate way.
